Same sex couples get ready to wed

NEW HAVEN -- A breeze gently tossed the tied bundles of white balloons about.

Baskets of red roses lined the bannisters. Clear bubbles fluttered aimlessly toward the sky.

It's a scene couples like John Anderson and Garrett Stack, J.E. Martin and Denise Howard, and Jeffrey Busch and Stephen Davis never thought would come and now they will never forget it.

At 9:27 a.m. Wednesday, their wishes, dreams and future were fulfilled. That's when Superior Court Judge Jonathan Silbert penned the final order allowing same sex couples to legally marry in Connecticut.

Peg Oliviera, a 36-year-old yoga teacher, and Jennifer Vickery, a 44-year-old lawyer, both of New Haven, wasted little time getting married shortly after obtaining their license on the New Haven Green.

"I feel like I waited my whole life for this day and for Stephen," said Busch, an administrative law judge in New York City who lives with Davis and their six-year-old son, Elijah, in Wilton.

"It's an extraordinary and joyous day," said Davis, a technology manager at Columbia University.

"I'm proud of the people in Connecticut. This is the best place in the country to live."

But that wasn't always the case.
